ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON

  • Born: in 1774(New York City)
  • Died: in 1821(from tuberculosis)
  • Spouse: William Seton
  • 5 children
  • Was born in the Episcopalian church

FINDING HER FAITH

  • Married to Willam, a businessman, at age 19.
  • Eventually William lost his job.
  • William got sick from tuberculosis and moved to Italy.
  • They moved to Italy because a doctor said the climate would help his condition
  • First time she was ever exposed to the Catholic Religion.

ACOMPLISHMENTS

  • Established St. Joseph's Academy & free Catholic schooling.
  • When she joined the church she made vows of poverty, chastity, &obedience.
  • Later she was called Mother Seton.
  • She established the Sisters of St. Josephs with two other people.
  • Today, 6 religious communities derived from the Sisters of St. Josephs.

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS

  • She lost her mother at a young age.
  • She lost her hsband after a few years of marriage.
  • Struggled to raise her 5 children on her own.
  • Was abandoned by her family because she switched her religion.
  • Because of the way she handled these situations she was considered kind, patient, and courteous

CANONIZATION

  • She was canonized in 1975 as the Patron of Catholic Schools
  • Her feast day is January 4
  • She was devoted to the Sacre Scripture, Holy Eucharist, and Blessed Virgin Mary.
  • She wanted people to maintain in constant prayer and presence of God.
