WHAT IS A SAINT?

A saint is a holy one of God who is bound in heaven.

ROAD TO CANONIZATION

  • Venerated on January 3rd 1943 by Pope Pius XII
  • Beatified on June 22nd 1980
  • Canonized on October 21st 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI

BIRTH

  • Born in year of 1656
  • Born near Auriesville in New York
  • Daughter of a Mohawk warrior
  • Mother captured by Iroquois Indians
  • Forced to marry chief

CHILDHOOD

  • Mom died of smallpox
  • Smallpox left her face scarred
  • Damaged her eyesight
  • Taken in by aunt & uncle

St. Kateri Tekakwitha was the first ever Native American to be canonized as a saint.

DEATH

  • Died on April 17th, 1680
  • Buried in Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada
  • Some say she died of natural causes
  • Some say of serious illness
