St. Marcellin Champagnat was born
on May 20, 1789 in
Marlhes, France.

At the time of his birth, the French Revolution was just starting.
In the United States, George Washington was elected as the 1st president.

1816

  • On July 2, 1816, Marcellin was ordained a priest.
  • He was sent to La Valla, France.

OCTOBER 1816

  • Marcellin visited a dying boy named John Baptiste Montagne, aged 17. His lack of knowledge on Jesus had pushed Marcellin to form the Marist Brothers.

On January 2, 1817, the Marist Brothers were founded by Marcellin.

Marcellin was caught in a snowstorm with Br. Stanislaus when they were saved by Mr. Donnet. They were able to see his lantern in the storm.

Marcellin Champagnat died on June 6, 1840 after battling stomach cancer.

In the United States, William Harrison becomes president.

Marcellin was made venerable in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV.

In 1955, he was beatified by Pope Pius XII.

Finally, on April 18, 1999, he was canonized as Saint Marcellin Champagnat by Saint Pope John Paul II.
