PRESENTATION OUTLINE

STAINLESS STEEL

BY: DAX PARKER, JUSTIN HUTCHISON, AND TYLER SUTHERLAND

CONTENTS

  • Mostly iron (at least 50%)
  • Throw in some chromium (10%-30%)
Additional elements may include manganese, phosphorous, sulfur, silicon, and traces of oxygen, nitrogen, and aluminum.

INTERSTIDIAL? SUBSTITUTIONAL?

  • Both!
  • Carbon atoms fit into interstices
  • Some iron atoms are replaced

FIRST USE

  • Around 1904
  • By French scientist Leon Guillet
Gulliet used stainless steel from around 1904 to 1911. He discovered a way to produce carbon free chromium.

USEFULNESS

  • Self healing
  • Doesn't need finishing or coating
  • Stays shiny for decades
Because of the chromium, a thin transparent layer is formed on the surface of the steel. When the surface is scratched, the thin layer that is only a few atoms thick will rebuild itself with the help of water or oxygen.
