• Fought for control of the city of Stalingrad
• Operation Winter Storm was to capture Stalingrad
• 6th Army and elements of the 4th Panzer Army.
• Intensive Luftwaffe bombing

• On 16 December, the Soviets launched Operation Little Saturn
• Punch through the Axis army (mainly Italians)
• The Germans set up a "mobile defense"
