  • Ioseph Djugashvili (1897)
  • Born in Georgia
  • Educated as a priest
  • Young and convinced socialist
  • Started from the bottom.

STALIN AND LENIN

  • Stalin made his way in the Bolshevik Party
  • He gained Lenin's trust
  • However, he was not a major player within the party.
  • Outstanding administrator, lacked of political skills.
  • In 1923, Lenin said that Stalin was "too rude"

HOW DID STALIN BECOME THE USSRs LEADER

  • 1922 appointed as Party's General Secretary
  • Bolshevik's leadership member
  • Used Lenin's death in his favor
  • Outweighed Trotsky's power and image.

STALIN'S MOMENT

  • While Lenin was sick, Stalin created a new leadership
  • He persecuted, one by one, his detractors
  • He declared himself Lenin's successor.
  • Trotsky was put aside during Lenin's funeral.
  • People thought that Trotsky had betrayed Lenin.
