EFFECT OF THE ACT

  • The colonists did not approve this tax because they saw it as the first attempt to raise money by taxing the colonists directly
  • The colonists protested these taxes.

REPEALING THE ACT

  • In 1765, delegates from nine colonies met to discuss the Stamp Acts.
  • Everyone wanted the Stamp Act to be repealed, even London merchants.
  • The Stamp Act was repealed on March 18, 1766. Shortly after, the Declaratory Acts were passed, which said that Parliament could make laws for the colonies.
