Purpose

  • Address the different states of campus maintenance across the district
  • Monitor and support new and/or struggling staff
  • Provide monitoring instrument for communication to Principals

Research

  • Campus walk-throughs were conducted in Fall semester with foreman and Asst. Superintendent for Support Services
  • Collaborative meetings with Custodial Supervisor, Foreman, Assistant Superintendent for Support Services
  • Needs assessment conducted to identify "Big Rocks"

Discoveries

  • Training delivered sporadically
  • Lack of follow-up trainings within a structured plan
  • Lack of clarity between responsibilities of Head and Assistant custodians
  • Guidelines needed
  • Campuses in poor condition add to workload of crews from other campuses that have to come in and assist.

Recommendations

  • Develop series of bilingual training videos
  • Develop guidelines and posters with safety targets & best cleaning practices
  • Foreman will share campus maintenance checklist with Principals after each monitoring visit.
  • Develop guidelines for responsibilities, HR issues, evaluation process

Accountability

  • Share sample letters and memorandums with Head custodians to model documentation standards for employee concerns
  • Coordinate shadowing opportunities for crew members needing support
  • Use training videos to help struggling custodians improve job performance.
