characteristics:

  • They do not have gills, scales, or fins like fish do.
  • they have tiny tube feet to help them move along 
  • There are about 2,000 species.
  • they belong to the Phylum Echinodermata.
  • another name for them is "sea star"

  • Notochord, or a rod of vacuolated cells.
  • Hollow nerve cord

distinguishing characteristics:

  • The appendages, or arms, of a starfish give him his unique star shape
  • theyre not actually fish.
  • Starfish skin is covered in tiny spines that look like small lumps to the naked eye.
  • These spines help keep a starfish clean.
  • The organ pumps water throughout the starfish's body, helping him to move.

general characteristics:

  • Instead of eyes seeing objects, a starfish has eyespots that sense light. 
  • The mouth is not quite the same as the oral cavity on most animals.
  • the starfish pushes his stomach out through his mouth to eat.
  • He has one eyespot at the end of each arm that looks like small dot
