They explain that nonconformity often “leads to positive inferences of status and competence” (Bellezza et al.). However, it only leads to those benefits if it is “associated with deliberateness and intentionality” (Bellezza et al.). The majority of the time nonconformity, when viewed positively, “grants more status and competence” to the nonconformist (Bellezza et al.). As stated, “being perceived as having high status is important, since it can translate into having greater influence on teams and within organizations” (Bellezza et al.). Nonconformity can change the way people are viewed, and ultimately give them a higher place in society.

One surprising benefit of nonconformity is that it “signals confidence to others” (Bellezza et al.). It shows that “one has the autonomy to act according to one’s one inclinations” (Bellezza et al.). Another benefit is that it presents a person as having authority over their own decisions, and gives them the freedom to “act independently and behave according to their own rules” (Bellezza et al.). In addition, it encourages “being creative and seeking social distinction through original, novel or unique” ideas and accessories (Bellezza et al.). Overall, it can be considered as “disregarding a norm entirely” (Bellezza et al.).
