The word "California" was used in a romantic book by Garcia Rodriguez de Montalvo where he pictured an island as plenty and peaceful with bold and ragged rocks with field of gold and valuable stones.
Second theory: It's possible that the name was created from the Catalan words, "calor"- hot & "forn" meaning oven.
Third theory: Native American phrase said, "kali forno" meaning high hill.
The Golden State- in 1848 with the discovery of gold a lot gold flakes & golden poppies were found each spring!
FUN FACT: Sequoia National Park contains the largest living tree. Its trunk is 102 feet in circumference.
