State Bird:Cardinal
The Cardinal is the state bird.The Cardinal is the state bird for 7 states including Lllinois, Indiana, Kentucky,and West Virginia.The female Cardinals breed 2-3 times each season.The female builds the nest and tends the hatchlings for about 10 days while the male brings food.North Carolina designated the Northen Cardinal as the official state bird in 1943.

The Dogwood is the state flower.The blossom of the Dogwood tree was designated as the official state flower of North Carolina in1941.The Dogwood is one of the most common trees in North Carolina,found in all parts of the state from the mountains to the coast.Dogwood blossoms appear in early Spring and continue on into Summer.Most often the flowers are white,but shades of pink and red are not uncommon.

The state stone is the Emerald.North Carolina designated the Emerald as official state precious stone in 1973.An Emerald crystal thought to be the largest ever found in North America was found in 2003 near Statesville,North Carolina.A greater variety of minerals have been found in North Carolina than in any other state including some of the most valuable and unique gems in the world.A 71- carat stone unearthed at the same location yielded two finished stones-the Prince that sold for $500,000 and the Carolina Queen.

The state beverage is milk.Milk was designated the official state beverage of North Carolina in 1987.Seventeen other states(including bordering states of South Carolina and Virginia) recognize milk as a state symbol.North Carolina ranks 31st among dairy producing states in the nation(2006 milk production totaled approximately $ 139 million).Milk has been called a nearly perfect food - a source of protien,calcium,and several other important nutrients.Less than half of milk produced is consumed as a beverage.

The state fish is the Southern Appalachian Brook Trout.North Carolina designated the Southern Appalachian Brook Trout as the official fresh water trout in 2005.Sometimes called "specks" because of their unique spotted appearance,the Southern Appalachian Brook Trout(Salvelinus fontinalis) is a genetically distinct species.

The state colors are blue and red.North Carolina designated blue and red as the official state colors in 1945 (of shades appearing in the state flag and the National flag).No specific meanings were attached to the in the legislation,but traditionally colors do have specific meanings in heraldic devices such as seals,coats of arms,and flags.Although the National flag also had no meanings specifted to the colors,the Great Seal of the United States does.Red is a symbol of hardiness and valour Blue signifies vigilance,perseverance and justice (also the color of the Chief).

The state shell is the Scotch Bonnet.North Carolina designated the Scotch Bonnet (Phalium granulatum) as the official state shell in 1965.The Scotch Bonnet is found along the Atlantic coast from North Carolina to Brazil.North Carolina was the first state to adopt a seashell symbol.First cataloged in 1778,the seashell was so because of its resemblance to the caps worn by Scottish peasants and because the color pattern resembles a Scottish plaid or tartan.

The state berry is the blueberry.North Carolina designated
the blueberry (genus vaccinium) as the official blue berry of the state in 2001.The strawberry (genus fragaria) was also recognized as the state red berry.Both berries are grown throughtout North Carolina and consumers can their own berries at farms from one end of the state to the other.One cup of blueberries supplies 50% of the recommended daily allowance for Vitamin C and 22% of the fiber recommended for a healthy diet.
