HOW STATES' RIGHTS LED TO THE CIVIL WAR (1800S)

WHAT ARE STATES' RIGHTS?

  • The belief that the states interests are better than the federal govt
  • The North and the South had completely different economies.
  • The federal govt didn't know about the South's personal needs.
  • Therefore, the South believed that they needed the right to make their own laws.

NORTH VS. SOUTH

  • The North believed that all states should abide by Congress's laws.
  • The South believed that they should choose their own laws.
  • The federal government doesn't know about the South's personal needs.
  • They thought that a representative from New York could not care about the South.

TARIFFS

  • The North wanted high tariffs on goods from other countries because it helped their economy.
  • It would make their goods less expensive and they would outsell competitors' goods.
  • The South didn't want tariffs because they imported many goods from other countries.

SLAVERY

  • The South wanted slaves because they needed them to run the plantations.
  • North didn't want slaves because they didn't have a need for them.
  • The North did not understand how important slaves were to the South's economy.
  • The South believed that they should make their own laws.
