Emotions affect our whole system - mind and body. In my book, The Resilience Reflex - 8 Keys to Transforming Barriers into Success in Life and Business, I share the following formula:
ER = SI + EI + EM

Emotional Resilience (ER) is a combination of Sensory Intelligence (SI), Emotional Intent (EI) and Emotional Management (EM).
Sensory Intelligence (SI) involves becoming aware and building on the other senses rather than just focusing on the feelings that are dragging you down. It’s paying attention to how you think rather than what we think.

For example, most people fear public speaking and if you fear it too, do you tend to focus more on how fast the heart beats, your cold clammy hands and your shaky jaw? Instead, stop and focus on the images you create, the self-talk you’re having and the feelings being generated because of the images and self-talk. This is your sensory blueprint and once you understand the mechanics, know that you can easily control your senses by switching the images in your hand, changing your self-talk to positive and in turn creating positive vibes.

Emotional Intent (EI) involves acknowledging the positive intention behind your struggle or challenge. Again, taking the example of public speaking, the positive intent behind the person feeling scared is usually the fear of embarrassment if he stutters or forgets his lines. But if he acknowledges that intent then he will prepare better in the areas that he thinks he will have difficulty or just decide to be his authentic self during his speech.

Emotional Management (EM) involves having emotional flexibility by subconsciously stepping back and looking at the struggle or challenge objectively and understanding what you truly want. I use this last step, in the formula, in my life and business challenges all the time because it’s so easy to get swept up in the emotions of worry and anxiety that we forget to seek a solution and instead just stay in the worrisome state. By stepping outside of myself and looking into the challenge as a third person (without those emotions) I can think clearly and come up with a solution that I may not have thought of.

Step-By-Step Formula to Build Emotional Resilience

How can some people thrive during challenging situations whereas others feel stuck with their backs against the wall? Emotional resilience is one of those switches that turns on when a resilient person is faced with a setback or challenge. A resilient person has this formula in his or her subconscious. Now its your turn to use this formula and make it a subconscious practice. Learn how to embrace change, navigate challenges and thrive.
