STERLING SILVER

ELLIE LOVETT, KATELYN STEVENSON, ANDREW GRANSTAFF

It is a substitutional alloy. That means that some of the original atoms have been replaced by new atoms.

The sterling silver alloy originated in continental Europe and was being used for commerce as early as the 12th century in the area that is known as northern Germany.

Copper gives sterling silver desired level of hardness.
Abrasive substances such as toothpaste may leave scratches when cleaning.
Sterling silver is stronger than some types of gold.

Sterling silver is made 92.5% silver, 7.5% other elements-most being copper, but sometimes zinc or platinum.

Sterling silver is good for use in the home because it has a strong luster that makes it shiny which is good to make jewelry and coins. Most film strips are also covered in a silver alloy.
