PRESENTATION OUTLINE

STIFLE

  • have the horse stand squarely
  • weight evenly distributed on all four legs
  • sensitive region for the horse
  • cassettes should be held in place with a cassette holder

CAUDOCRANIAL VIEW

  • Place the cassette against the cranial aspect of the stifle joint
  • angle the primary beam slightly proximodistally
  • note that the joint deviates laterally
  • Direct the primary beam toward the midsagittal plane of the limb
  • Center the primary beam on the joint
  • This view visualizes the femoral condyles, proximal tibia, and patella

Lateromedial View

  • Place the cassette against the medial aspect of the joint
  • as high (dorsal) in the flank as possible

  • includes the femorotibial joint, proximal tibia, and patella
  • femoral condyles should be superimposed so that only one condyle is visualized

LAMENESS EVALUATION

  • In addition to the commonly used views,
  • caudal lateral to cranial medial oblique view
  • flexed lateral to medial view
  • proximal to distal skyline view of the patella and distal femur
  • Osteochondrosis, fragmentation of the patella, femoral condylar cysts, and enthesiopathies of ligamentous attachments
