Plot
Henry Dobbins wraps the stockings around his neck
Gives him luck
He never gets hurt
"He got caught in the poem during a fierce little fire light no cover at all, but he just slipped the pantyhose over his nose and breathed deep and let the magic do its work."
His girlfriend broke up with him in a letter but he still wore the stockings for a comforter

The stockings represent the comfort of his girlfriend and home in America. Even though they're broken up the stockings still bring him the comfort he needs to get through the war.
