STOP AND FRISK, AND LORD OF THE FLIES

BY JASON BOWEN, SAM CULLINAN, JOSH MEROTH

What is stop and frisk?
Stop and frisk is when a police officer stops a civilian and frisks, or searches them for contraband or weapons. A police officer is only supposed to stop and frisk a civilian if they are committing a crime, about to commit a crime, or committed a crime.

Stop and frisks are often unjustified and based off racial profiling. In 2011 only 11% of stops were based on crime suspects and 90% of people stopped were black or Hispanic and 88% were innocent.

Irrational fear is clear to see in stop and frisk statistics. Police officers have a clear irrational fear of blacks and Hispanics and assume most of them are criminals. Their irrational fear leads to irrational actions like unjust stops of innocent people. In lord of the flies the boys irrational fear of the beast led to a irrational action in which the murdered Simon.

The core problem is racism but we cannot change how people think, but racial profiling from stop and frisks can be helped by simply adding a camera on all on-duty police officers. This would help prove whether the officers had reasonable suspicion to stop and frisk those they frisk. Cameras on police officers is already in affect but it should be in full affect nationwide.
