WHAT IS STRESS?

  • Meaning
  • Emphasis, weight
  • Value, or worth

WHAT IS A STRESSOR?

  • A stressor is anything that causes stress
  • Real or imagined fears
  • Anything anticipated or unexpected
  • People, objects, places are all potential stressors
  • Events and situations are all potential stressors.

LIFE SITUATIONS THAT CAUSE STRESS:

  • School demands
  • Bullying
  • Peer pressure
  • Family problems or abuse
  • Breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend

ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES OF STRESS:

  • An unsafe neighborhood
  • Social media and internet
  • Natural disasters
  • Threat of terrorist attacks
  • And war

BIOLOGICAL AND COGNITIVE CAUSES:

  • Changes in body
  • Illness and injury
  • Disability
  • Poor self-esteem
  • Personal appearance

STRESS CAUSES BECAUSE OF BEHAVIOR:

  • A busy schedule
  • Relationship issues
  • Smoking issues
  • Usage of alcohol
  • And usage of other drugs

YOUR BODY'S REACTION TO STRESS:

  • Dilated pupils
  • Increase in perspiration
  • Faster heart rate and pulse
  • Rise in blood pressure
  • And faster respiration rate

Other symptoms:
-Narrowing of arteries
-Increased blood flow to muscles and brain
-Increase in muscle tension
-Release of blood sugar, fats, and cholesterol

Psychosomatic Response: A physical reaction that results from stress rather than from an injury or illness. Some of the effects are headaches, a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, bruxism, or digestive disorders.

WAYS TO AVOID AND LIMIT STRESS:

  • Use refusal skills
  • Plan ahead and think positively
  • Seek support or help
  • Avoid alcohol and other drugs
  • Practice relaxation techniques

TO STAY HEALTHY AND MANAGE STRESS YOU SHOULD:

  • Get adequate rest.
  • (At least 8 hours)
  • Get regular physical activity.
  • (It can release pent-up energy and clear your mind)
  • Eat nutritious foods.
