PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Atomic Theory And Structure

BY: SHERIDAN MILLER

IN THE BEGINNING

  • 440 BC
  • Democritus (Greek Philosopher)
  • Thought: atoms were smallest form of an element
  • Atom: smallest unit that still contains the elements properties

Dalton's Postulates

  • 1700s- discovered that elements can combine to make compounds
  • John Dalton: British teacher and chemist
  • Experiment results: elements combined makes compounds

CONTINUED

  • Developed 3 theories
  • 1. EVERYTHING is made of atoms
  • 2. Atoms in the same element are exactly alike
  • 3. Atoms can combine to make new substances
  • 1800s- most scientists agreed with him. new info=unclear parts

Thomson's Discovery of Electron Properties

  • 1897- JJ Thomson (British scientist)
  • Proved Dalton's theory had flaws
  • particles inside an atom
  • Atoms have smaller parts
  • Cathode-ray tube: discovery of electrons

Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment

  • 1909-Ernst Rutherford bounced light off of gold foil
  • Discovered nucleus (center of atom) (positively charged)

Bohr's Nuclear Atom

  • 1913: Niels Bohr (Danish Scientist)
  • Created model for location of electrons (bohr model)
  • located on rings, not in between

Other Contributions

  • Irene Curie: discovered atom's shape through experiment
  • Robert Milikan- discovered unit of charge for electron
  • led to mass of electron
