Research Defines It As

  • ideas are discussed for their explanatory potential as opposed to being called "good" or "bad," "right" or "wrong"
  • question-asking is invited

An Activity for Practice

  • The class is curious about why their shadows are longer in the morning and shorter at noon.
  • They investigate and make hypotheses on their own (tracking shadows outside and the time of day).
  • The class talks together about the importance of different possibilities.

An Activity for Practice

  • Gradually the class narrows down their list of reasons.
  • "Mistakes" are valued for the learning they provide and as natural parts of the inquiry process.
