What are the possible reasons?

  • Lack of motivation
  • Lack of communication
  • Availability of work

motivation

  • Customizing assignments that would engage students
  • Use students' interests and curiosity to help with motivation
  • Focus on growing as a learner versus getting a grade
  • Teachers create (or download) extra credit menus to give students choice
  • Call it “extra learning” or make an “enrichment” bulletin board

Communication

  • Students might not be aware of extra work
  • Teachers don't have the extra work for various reasons
  • Use "Enrichment" bulletin board to post extra credit opportunities

Example of Assignments that would engage Students

  • Educational-based social media tools such as edmodo
  • Online assignments such as StorylineOnline
  • Open-ended projects: pick a topic and present it in any way
  • Activities could be tiered and teachers guide students towards working on appropriate activity
