Renaissance (1400-1600)

  • The kiss by Francesco Hayez (1859)
  • The work of art is on display in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, Italy.
  • The painting coveys the main features of Halain Romanticism. The artwork was created in 1859 and was presented at the Pinacoteca di Brera on the 9th of September.

  • The painting was dedicated to the Risorgiment, which was the long series of wars with which Haly was freed from foreign domination. The exhibition displayed large painting of battles and glorious scenes but the most admired painting there was the small painting on canvas with two figures, which at first glances has nothing to do with the war.

  • Infact, the painting was not made to depict a love scene, but only symbolically represent the alliance between two nations, Haly and France. The painting was not only a timeless masterpiece it also is a wonderful reflection of the Halian spirit in the 19th century.

  • When Hayez painted his work in 1859, Italy was in the middle of the Italian peninsula still consisted of a large number of city-states, Republics, and other independent entities into the country of Italy only took place in 1861. Francesco Hayez made five known versions the painting.

  • The first version was commissioned by Count Alfonso Maria Visconti of Saliceto who asked Francesco Hayez to capture the hopes associated with the recent alliance between France and the kingdom of Sicily.

  • The count donated it in 1886, one year before his death, to the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, where the painting is still on display today. In the same year he painted the original version, Francesco Hayez also created a smaller watercolor version in an oval format. The colors of their outfits have received a lot of attention.

  • In their fight for independence, if you look at the colors of their outfits, you can recognize both the green, white and red of the Hanlian flag and the blue, white and red of the French flag. So, the painting not only Symbolized the unification of Italy, but also the union between the French and Hanlians, symbolized by this kiss.

Modern art includes artistic work produced during the period from the 1860s to the 1970s and denotes the styles of the art produced during that era.

  • The history of modern art started with Impressionism. It all began in Paris as a reaction to a very formal and rigid style of painting - done inside studios and set by traditional institutions like the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Movements of modern art, the most distinct include Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dadaism, Abstract Impressionism, and Pop Art. Art is well known for its amazing feature of educating people and creating that pleasant environment of a new world in a whole new vision. A new way of translating thoughts, feelings, and emotions based on experiences are now presented with the help of projectors, interactive screens or videos.
