Subject Pronouns

  • I, You, He, She, It, We, They
  • Subject pronouns act as subjects of the sentence.
  • Subject pronouns are used in the nominative case (Predicate Nominative)

Examples

  • He is a very kind friend. (Subject)
  • May I speak with Mr. Streeter? This is he. (Predicate nominative)

Object Pronouns

  • Me, You, Her, Him, It, Us, Them
  • Object pronouns are used as a direct or indirect object or object of the preposition.

Examples

  • Mr. Streeter recited the play for us. (object of preposition)
  • He gave them a study guide for the test. (indirect object)
  • The teacher told me to study. (direct object)

Between you and (I, me), that steak was undercooked.
WHY?

He smiled at Kay (I, me).
WHY?

John and (he, him) went to the game.
WHY?

The Problem Pronouns

Who vs Whom

Here is a little trick to remember:
he=who
him=whom

Who/Whom write the letter?
He wrote the letter. Therefore who is correct.

We wondered who/whom the book was about.
Look at the second clause - The book was about him. Therefore whom is correct.
