PROCRASTINATION

  • While you are waiting, someone else is DOING
  • Best work under pressure is a myth
  • You have a finite amount of time in your life
  • People are more willing to help long before a deadline

DISORGANIZATION

  • None of us are smart enough to remember everything
  • You are the only one that can organize your life
  • Clutter = Confusion
  • Plan so you don't forget
  • Plan so you are prepared

OVER-CONFIDENCE

  • This is the greatest hinderance to growth
  • You all have more access to information than any other generation
  • Your knowledge is factual, but not always experiential
  • Copying and creating are two different things
  • You matter as an individual... But are part of a group

MISCOMMUNICATION

  • Being uncomfortable talking to peers or teachers
  • Exaggeration - tone matters!
  • Not clarifying confusion
  • Talking ABOUT problems without trying to fix them
  • Taking things personally

SELF DOUBT / PITY

  • I can't is the same as I won't
  • It is very easy to feel like the world is out to get us
  • The world is competitive...
  • Ain't nobody got time for that!

HELP THEM ORGANIZE

  • Tell them about events
  • Review band calendar weekly
  • When we cover times / details in class
  • Take notes and share them with your parents
  • It is your responsibility as a young adult to develop this skill.

BE HUMBLE

YOU ARE HERE TO LEAN

HOW TO BE A LEARNER

  • Make mistakes and embrace them
  • Don't try to know it all
  • Make lots of little gains
  • Don't take criticism personally
  • Take pride in your accomplishments... And then look for the next opportunity

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

  • Positivity goes a long way
  • Come to me with your concerns
  • Would you feel disrespected if...
  • Your teacher talked to your parents about a problem before you knew?
  • There should be mutual respect between us!
