Where did sugar come from?

  • It's history can be traced back to the 6th century B.C.E in Polynesia.
  • Crusades brought it to Arabic culture.
  • Columbus reportedly brought it to the Caribbean.
  • Britain established over 100 sugar refineries by the 18th century.
  • 100 years later sugar was available for the common man.

SUGAR TODAY

  • It is grown in the Southern US, Mexico,South America, Africa, South East Asia and Australia
  • American sugar often comes from either Florida or Hawaii.
  • Northwestern Europe still tends to get most of its sugar from beets.
  • Irish sugar from beets is particularly favored.

Modern Cookie Traditions
Sometime in the 1930's it became traditional for children to leave sugar cookies for Santa Clause on Christmas Eve. Because of how easy it is to cut and shape the dough, custom cookies have become wildly popular. According to culinary historians, the first historic record of cookies was their use as test cakes. A small amount of batter was baked to test oven temperature.
