SUICIDE

SUICIDE:

  • The act or instance of taking one’s own life voluntarily and intentionally.

STATISTICS:

  • Everyday approximately 105 Americans die by suicide.
  • Suicide is the third leading cause for 15-to-24 year olds.
  • Studies show that at least 90% of teens who kill themselves have some mental health problem.
  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S.

3 POSSIBLE REASONS:

  • Stress about self-worth are common problems in many teens that can trigger suicide.
  • Depression is a major cause of suicide that is usually present in teen years
  • Major disappointment also triggers suicidal tendencies in teens like rejection or failure.

MYTHS:

  • Talking about suicide or asking someone if they feel suicidal will encourage suicidal attempts.
  • Young people who talk about suicide never attempt or complete suicide.
  • Attempted or completed suicides happen without warning.

FACTS:

  • Suicide among males is 4 times higher than among females. Male deaths represent 79% of all U.S suicides.
  • Females are more likely than males to have had suicidal thoughts.
  • Each suicide intimately affects at least 6 other people.

WARNING SIGNS:

  • Talking about wanting to die or to kill yourself
  • Looking for a way to kill yourself
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose
  • Talking about feeling trapped or being in pain
  • Saying there being a burden to other people
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Withdrawing or feeling isolated

STRATEGIES:

  • Do not leave them alone
  • Be willing to give and get help sooner rather than later
  • Take it seriously when they talk to you
  • Comfort the person with words of encouragement

HAVING SUICIDAL THOUGHTS:

  • Avoid drugs and alcohol
  • Make your home safe
  • Don’t keep the suicidal feelings to yourself

AFFECTS OF SUICIDE

  • Failure because a person they loved felt unloved and committed suicide
  • Extreme guilt for not preventing the suicide
  • Anger or resentment at the person who chose to take his or her life
