SUMER

SUMER A CIVILIZATION?

  • Yes.
  • It had all of the ingredients needed for a civilization.
  • The ingredients are:
  • Geographic Boundaries, Governments, Economy, High Population,
  • Social Classes, Culture, and a System of Record Keeping.

GEOGRAPHIC BOUNDARIES

  • (Shown in the background.)

GOVERNMENTS

  • Each city-state of Sumer had its own ruler, which were equivalent to kings.

ECONOMY

  • Sumerians had a system of money and trade.
  • Their currency looked like metal coil.
  • They had surpluses of food and goods so things could be sold with the system.

HIGH POPULATION

  • Lots of people could live in one place.
  • Sumer had separate city-states because it was so big do there was a lot of people.

SOCIAL CLASSES

  • The social classes in Sumer were (from highest to lowest):
  • Rulers... High priests & nobles... Officials, scribes & minor priests...
  • Craftsmen... Servants, laborers, & peasants.

CULTURE

  • Sumer made sculptures of various things (like image behind),
  • and Sumerians had religion, since they had made offerings to gods,
  • plus, they made sacrifices and had religious ceremonies.
  • I believe their learning system was just to teach each other.

SYSTEM OF RECORD KEEPING

  • They had a writing system (shown in picture),
  • A counting system, since they came up with the '60' counting system
  • And they had a time/calendar system because they used the 60 counting system for it.

SUMER IS A CIVILIZATION!
