In chapter 25, Kate Barlow keeps on asking Sam, the onion man, to fix the school house. Sam fixes the roof, the desk, the crooked door, and the window. Once Sam finished all the work, and there was nothing left to do, Kate Barlow noticed that she had fallen in live with Sam. Before they new it, they were kissing.

In chapter 26, everybody finds out that Kate Barlow and Sam kissed. This is not a good thawing because Sam is an African American and it's against the law for a black person to kiss a white. The next day, nobody came to school. Later that day, Charles Walker and the rest of the town distorted the school house and set it on fire. Sam was going to have to be hung so he tried to escape but instead he got shot.
