Integrated Expressive Arts

  • Over the course of this semester, I have had the opportunity to be apart of Integrated Expressive Arts.
  • I am thankful that this class is a requirement because I have learned so much! The different art studios and tasks will most definitely be implemented in my future classroom!

Overview

  • Within the chapter readings, I have learned that art is more than drawing on paper. Art incorporates music, dance, and play.

Learning from the Chapters

  • Children are creative when they expressive themselves in symbolic ways.
  • It is important to engage children in dance and movement.
  • Children should incorporate dramatic play while playing.
  • Children are active learners.

Learning from Studios

  • Within the studio sessions, I got to learn about different art lessons based on the grade level.
  • I made an oil pastel and water color drawing of my family. (first grade)
  • I also created a story sequence for the story, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." (second grade)

Learning from Studios Cont.

  • As the grade levels go up, students should be learning more ways to describe their artwork using descriptive words. Ex: near, next to, behind, etc.
  • In addition, as the grade level goes up, students should be using more art tools in their artwork to demonstrate their creativity.

Learning from Art Tasks

  • There are many tools that teachers can use to incorporate expressive arts in the classroom. You can use photo, video, audio, story telling and presentation tools.
  • Ex: Youtube, GoAnimate, Chirbit, etc.
  • These tools can express ones's creativity.

Art Task Cont.

  • It is important that the students understand how the tools work.
  • Teachers should demonstrate the tools before having their students use them.
  • As a future teacher, it is important that I make sure all of my students can access and utilize these tools.

Favorite Parts

  • Greek dancing
  • Visiting the Center for Applied Drama and Autism
  • Creating masks

Big Take Aways

  • Creative expression plays a huge role in a child's learning process to support the physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and aesthetic development.
  • It is so important to allow students to use their imagination and creativity.
  • Art project should be alligned with standards.
