The book is about a naive boy named Bruno who’s father is promoted to Commandant by Adolf Hitler, they then have to move because of Früher’s orders, which makes Bruno upset because he has to leave his friends behind.
Bruno eventually gets settled in to his new home and goes exploring outside the barriers of his home, he finds a metal fence and meets a Jewish boy named Shmuel. Bruno keeps bringing food to him everyday when it doesn’t rain. Bruno eventually gets lice in his hair so they end up shaving all his hair off.
Bruno jokes how he looks like Shmuel, but then he realises a plan so Shmuel can find his dad. Bruno disguises himself with the prison clothes and hides with Shmuel until they end up getting killed in the gas chamber.
“...Despite the mayhem that followed, Bruno found that he was still holding Shmuel's hand in his own and nothing in the world would have persuaded him to let go.”
“The thing about exploring is that you have to know whether the thing you've found is worth finding. Some things are just sitting there, minding their own business, waiting to be discovered. Like America. And other things are probably better off left alone. Like a dead mouse at the back of the cupboard.”
