The highest of these is called the Supreme Court
All lower courts are called inferior courts
What do they do?
They interpret and apply the constitution to the laws of the land
Why were they created?
Imagine the alternative… each state would be free to interpret federal law. Does this sound confusing? It was!

Jurisdiction

  • “The official power to make legal decisions and judgments”
  • Executive
  • Concurrent
  • Original
  • Appellate
Executive Jurisdiction: only federal courts can hear the case
EX: A crime on a U.S. ship, or a tax crime
Concurrent Jurisdiction: may be tried in a state of federal court
EX: A money disagreement between citizens of different states
