(external conflict) Where Grace lived there were dust storms. To prepare for the dust storms Grace's family put wet bath towels over the windows and over their mouths and noses. They do this to keep as much dust out of their house and body possible. Sometimes the family uses the cellar for shelter and eat food that was prepared before the storm hits.
(external conflict) Helen's family has financial problems because of the dust storms. Helen's father is a farmer and his crops were getting torn to pieces because of the wind and dust. Because of this Helen's father has nothing to sell for profit.
(inner conflict) Sadie is a mean person. She thinks she is better than everybody else and makes fun of people that aren't "rich" like her.
In Dalhart, Texas in the year of 1935 Grace Edwards', her family, and the people of Dalhart struggle through the rough times that the dust storms bring.

Rising action: Grace's forever friend, Helen, moves to California due to financial issues the dust storms have brought.
Climax: Suddenly, out of nowhere, a duster hit. It was the largest, most black dust storm Grace had ever seen. Grace went to find her sister who had been outside grabbing wet towels to put over the windows and their mouths and noses. Her sister was chasing a towel that had blown away. Grace grabbed her sister and realized they couldn't make it home before the duster hit. The sisters bolted to Helen's house that hade been abandoned when she and her family moved to California.
Falling action: Grace meets a boy her age named David. While she is volunteering at the hospital with her mother, a famous doctor stops by the hospital to treat patients with dust pneumonia (a respiratory illness caused by breathing in too much dust). The doctor and his son David stay at the hospital for two weeks treating patients. When David leaves Dalhart, Grace is melancholy because it feels as if she has lost her forever friends.
Exposition: Sadie apologizes for being so cruel towards Helen and Grace. The three girls become forever friends.
