Suspense

by:Mario N. Destiny R. Cassandra T. Cheryl B.

Suspense

  • suspense- a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen
  • In both stories they give off a sense of curiousity and wonder through the deaths and family line
  • Elements present: murder, gloomy, cruelty, and suicide

The Fall of the House of Usher

  • through the attemptive murder and confession of Roderick burying Madeline alive, and when she had risen from her tomb. "we put her living in the tomb!"
  • His intended result was a success because it had the readers on edge.

The Fall of the House of Usher

  • through the attemptive murder and confession of Roderick burying Madeline alive, and when she had risen from her tomb. "we put her living in the tomb!"
  • His intended result was a success because it had the readers on edge.

A Rose for Emily

  • through predicting the dead of the main character
  • the author made the audience/readers believe that Emily was going to commit suicide with the arsenic she purchased
  • " I want some poison."... "I want the best you have."... "I want arsenic."

Comparison

  • Both stories had lost family members causing a selfish/hateful effect towards the main characters, the townspeople and friends
  • The Fall of the House of Usher was more effective with suspense. The author used more of a darker mysterious and evil tone adding that extra edge

Conclusion

  • In these two stories, without suspense there would be no clear understanding or relation with gothic literature. Each story gave off the exhilarating feel one more than the other.
