THE PRISON DOOR

  • The the iron fist represents the prison door.
  • " was heavily timbered with oak, and studded with iron spikes.”

ROSEBUSH

  • The rosebud represents hope
  • “It may serve, let us hope, to symbolise some sweet moral blossom that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow.” (71)

SCARLET LETTER

  • The reminder app represents the scarlet letter.
  • The scarlet letter is a constant reminder of Hester's sin.

SCARLE LETTER

  • The scarlet letter also means"able"
  • Through charity, people start to forget the original meaning of the "A"
  • “Such helpfulness was found in her..that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification."(238)

DARKNESS

  • The darkness represents guilt.
  • When Hester goes to the woods to see dimsdale the setting is described as:
  • “chill and sombre. Overhead was a gray expanse of cloud” (271)

LIGHT

  • Light represents the feeling to be guilt free and relieved
  • When Hester lets her hair down the sun comes out.
  • “All at once, as with a sudden smile of heaven, forth burst the sunshine"(303)

FOREST/WILDERNESS

  • It is also the place where the witches perform their "dark magic".
  • The Puritans think of it as a horrible place where sinner's go to sin.
  • Hell represents the forest.

FOREST/WILDERNESS

  • The forest reminds me of the other side of the fence in the Hunger Games.
  • Both represents freedom.
  • Hester and Dimmesdale discuss running away when they are in the forest
  • Katniss and Gale discuss running away when they are in the forest

THE BROOK

  • The brook divides:
  • The strict Puritan side
  • And the lawless, free, wilderness.
  • “that this brook is the boundary between two worlds” (311)
  • The Berlin wall represents the brook.

HESTER PRYNNE

  • An angel represents Hester
  • Hester is described as beautiful compared to the other women.
  • The other women were described as dull.
  • “her beauty shone out, and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy"(78)

HESTER PRYNNE

  • The mockingjay represents Hester as a rebel.
  • Through various acts, she rebells against the Puritans.

  • A cross represents Dimmesdale because he is the reverend .
  • The town thinks of him as a spiritual leader
  • “many people said, affected them like the speech of an angel.” (98)

  • Heathcliff represents Chillingworth's need for revenge.
  • "...grown to exist only by this perpetual poison of the direst revenge!” ( 254)

  • The "Black Man" represents chillingworth.
  • The Puritans say the black man was the devil.
  • "Chillingworth was a striking evidence of man's faculty of transforming himself into a devil"(250)

  • The scarlet letter represents Pearl.
  • She is the proof of the act of aduldry.
  • Pearl is described as dressing like the letter.
  • “, arraying her in a crimson velvet tunic... embroidered in...gold thread.”(148)

PEARL

  • The treasure represents Pearl.
  • Pearl was Hester's only treasure.
  • "as being of great price—purchased with all she had—her mother's only treasure!”(130)
