CAUSES OF THE REBELLION

  • Pre-existing internal turmoil made it difficult to maintain a stable political structure
  • Various natural disasters weakened China
  • China lost multiple battles, particularly by Europe, which weakened them
  • All of these teamed together with a poor economy to eventually create severe internal struggles in China
  • Wars over opium exacerbated the social issues, particularly in the south, as well as economically draining the county
