TALE OF TWO CITIES VOCAB

Word #1: Tumbril

A tumbril is a large cart, used during the French Revolution to transport people to the guillotine. Sydney Carton rode in a tumbril to the guillotine, where he was executed.

Example: "Six tumbrils carry the day's wine to La Guillotine."

Word #2: Forlorn

Forlorn means sad, abandoned, lonely, or hopeless. In the book, the word is used multiple items to describe situations and people that are desperate.

Example: "It is a forlorn hope at the best…"

Word #3: Gaoler

A gaoler is someone who is in charge of a jail or it's prisoners.

Example: "Two gaolers, who had been standing there, went out, and the prisoner was brought in, and put to the bar."

Word #4: Guillotine

A guillotine is a machine that executed people by decapitating them. The guillotine is an important symbol of the French Revolution because it was used to execute many aristocrats.

Example: "…The Guillotine would strike off her husband’s head next day."

Word #5: Packet
A packet is a ship that travels between two ports.
Example: "There will be a packet to Calais, tomorrow, drawer?"
