TAPEWORMS

A tapeworm is a parasitic flatworm that lives in the digestive tract. They can be 33ft long and live for up to 25 years.

FOOD CONTAMINATION

  • Do not allow cooked food to come in contact either raw food
  • Tapeworms are usually spread from contaminated food or drink
  • Eating meat that has not been cooked enough to kill tapeworms can also infect you
  • Store meat in cold temperatures
  • Do not let food sit out for long periods of time

HOW TO PREVENT TAPEWORMS IN YOUR PETS

  • Animals can ingest fleas carrying the tapeworm egg
  • Washing hands to prevent infection from feces is recommended
  • Making sure your pets have been treated for fleas
  • Make sure they do not consume contaminated meat

PERSONAL HYGENE

  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Worms can be spread by not washing hands after using the bathroom
  • Wash hands frequently

SYMPTOMS OF TAPEWORM INFECTION

  • Nausea
  • Weakness
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Hunger or loss of appetite

HOW TO GET RID OF TAPEWORMS IN HUMANS

  • See doctor
  • Give stool or blood test
  • Most commonly a medicine taken by mouth is prescribed
  • Medicine kills the tapeworms
  • Dead tapeworms pass from bowels
