ARISTOTLE

  • Introduced the two key concepts of taxonomy
  • Classification of organisms by type
  • The first to attempt to classify all the types of animals
  • He recorded his findings in Historia animalium
  • He also came up with the ladder of nature

  • This portrayed the essence of species as unchanging
  • He also came up with binomial definition
  • This is for genus and difference
  • Genus is fromthe greek root meaning birth but also means race or family
  • The difference is what separates it from other species

CARL LINNEAUS

  • He made an attempt to classify living organisms.
  • He made 2 kingdoms such as plant and animal kingdoms.
  • He also contributed in the system of binomial nomenclature.
  • He made a system including class,order,genus and species for taxonomy.
  • As a child he loved collecting plants and was known as the little botanist

  • He became a physician but turned to botany as a primary study
  • In 1735 he published his most innovative work called the system of nature
  • The first taxonomist to include humans with with the primates
  • hierarchical system of classification of kingdom to species with the method of binomial nomenclature

BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE

  • Binomial means 2 names
  • Formal system of naming species with 2 names in different latin
  • One for Genus and one for the species
  • Ex. Homo sapien
  • Gene name is always capitalized and species name is always lower case
