5 stages of teaching your kids to save money

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Birth - 5 yrs

  • set up a savings & a spending account at the bank.  
  • some is saved, some is spent each time they receive
  • put a little money in every week or month.  Every little bit helps.

3-5 YEARS

  • talk about saving in a positive way
  • make your child feel proud to reach savings targets

6 - 9 years

  • your child can earn a weekly allowance
  • teach the relationship between work and money
  • help your child set saving goals:
  • write their goal and a plan on paper & place it in a prominent place
  • want a new video game?  save $2 a week for 10 weeks!  

10-15 years

  • educate your child about the objectives of advertising
  • lead by example and show your kids that you save
  • let your children take part in a small part of budgeting
  • let your child budget their birthday party.  You set the limit.

16-18 yrs

  • work on larger savings goals e.g. car
  • many countries and states allow kids above 15 to work  
  • casual jobs teach teens lifelong skills
  • match saving 2 : 1 or something similar
  • find a savings goal which excites your teen.  Gap year overseas?
