PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Teaching Methods 2.0

Amy Janssen -- Portfolio

Current Reality

  • High % of low assessment scores -- ICD Diagnosis Coding
  • Overwhelmed students
  • Struggle to Comprehend & Retain
For Teaching Methods 2.0, I have selected the ICD Diagnosis Coding course which is offered in an online delivery only mode. I have attempted blended options in the past with very low enrollments. My goal is to enhance the online course to increase student engagement and student success.

The current reality that I focused on is the high percentage of low assessment scores within the course. From past experience, I see a great deal of students overwhelmed with the amount of material required to read each week and they struggle to comprehend the material included in the textbook. In addition, when teaching their capstone coding course in the 4th semester, many students do not retain the material from this 2nd semester course.

Evidence

  • EdWare: Course Success Rates
  • Blackboard: Assessment Scores (Past 3 semesters - score of 77% or less)
The data I used to decide on what I would focus on for this course is:

- EdWare Data: Course Success Rates are good, but there is room for improvement.

- Blackboard Data: This was the main evidence I used to help me with this project. I looked at assessment scores for the past 3 semesters and focused on the specific percentage where students scored a 77% or less on a quiz.

Results of my Blackboard data analysis are included here.

CSR = Course Success Rates are not bad, but could be higher.

Assessment Data (quiz data): The numbers identify the average score in the class for that specific assessment.

The figure in parentheses shows the percentage of students in the class that scored a 77% or below. As you can see, this percentage seemed to rise as the material got more complex towards the end of the semester.

Goals/Outcomes

  • Improve Assessment Scores
  • Improve Course Success Rates
  • Increase Comprehension
My goals or desired outcomes for this project would be to:

1. Improve assessment scores (quiz scores & exam scores)

2. Improve CSR (Course Success Rate)

3. Increase Comprehension (so students can retain information)

Main Goal

Decrease Effort to Learn in Online Setting
My main goal for this course in the online setting is to simplify the learning for the student and to decrease the effort it takes to learn this material online.

The textbook material can be very complex and often very challenging for students to understand. Even though they have numerous practice exercises (eg, case studies) to apply the information, they still struggle. The Power Point slides that correspond to the textbook chapters are simply highlights that summarize the same information in the text.

Plan

  • Develop Summaries
  • Summarize Thought Process
  • Provide Examples
My plan is to develop summaries of the more complex units. Again, the Power Points highlight key points, but do a terrible job of providing students with the thought process that goes along with it.

Included in my summaries will be the thought process they should go through in order to code something. In addition, I will provide numerous examples.

Untitled Slide

  • Record 5 Summaries - Camtasia
  • Most Challenging Units (per data)
  • Implement Spring/Fall 2016
Upon completion of the summaries, I will then record these (at least 5) using Camtasia and upload them to Blackboard.

Again, I will start this project by looking at the Assessment Data that showed the highest percentage where students got 77% or less on the quiz. These would be the more challenging units.

My plan is to implement this fully by Fall 2016. I would like to complete at least 2 or 3 for the current Spring 2016 course as well (for the later units as we are currently in the Spring semester).

Evaluate

  • Evaluate after Spring & Fall term
  • Increase in Assess. Scores (15% or less of class has 77% or less)
  • Increase in CSR by 2%
  • Decrease in Starfish Referrals/Flags
My evaluation plan will include looking at data from Blackboard, EdWare, and Starfis for the Spring and Fall 2016 terms.

Blackboard Data: I will be looking for an increase in assessment scores. I am hoping to see 15% or less of the class achieved a 77% or less on each quiz.

EdWare: I will be looking for an increase in CSR by 2%.

Starfish: I would hope to see a decrease in Starfish referrals and flags.
