Assessment
As this is an introduction to measurement or estimation, I would use observation notes for the student work. Then end with an exit ticket that addresses the concept you will address tomorrow. This will allow you to see where the class stands at this point.

Assessment
You could do a similar task to the book and ask students to divide a pie evenly for the people in their family and have them look at a scenario where more family showed up and then what happened to the fraction of the pie.
