TECOPA PUPFISH

BACKGROUND INFO

  • Cyprinodon Nevadensis Calidae
  • Originated in the north and south Tecopa hot spring
  • Survived in waters as warm as 42C (108F)
  • Usually ate blue green algae or mosquito larvae

CAUSES OF EXTINCTION

  • Decline began in1940's when the spring was canalized
  • Popularity in 1950s-60s led to building of hotels and trailer parks
  • URBANIZATION!!!!
  • Agricultural and recreational development of Tecopa springs

CONCLUSION

  • Agricultural and recreational work eliminated fish from springs
  • Officially delisted by the US fish and wildlife service in 1981
  • Extinct due to human interference
  • Would they be extinct if we had not urbanized there?
