• Tecumseh was a Native American leader of the Shawnee tribe
• The Shawnee tribe was a large tribal confederacy that greatly opposed the United States during Tecumseh's War.
• The Shawnee later became an ally of the British during the War of 1812

THE EARLY LIFE OF TECUMSEH

• Tecumseh means "Shooting Star" or "Panther Across the Sky"
• He grew up in the Ohio Valley
• He was born in March of 1768, but the exact date is unknown
• When Tecumseh was young his father was killed by frontiersmen
• When he was 15 he joined a group of Shawnee warriors who aimed to stop the white men's invasion of their land
