BRIEF BIO

  • Born Oct. 27, 1858 in NYC
  • Homeschooled till he was a teenager because of he was ill and asthmatic
  • Developed a passion for animals
  • Graduated Harvard in 1880
  • Married Alice Hathaway in 1880

WHAT HE HAS DONE

  • Captain of national guard
  • Minority leader of the New York State assembly
  • 1886-ran and was defeated for nyc mayorship and married his 2nd wife
  • He was a civil service commissioner, nyc police commissioner, assistant U.S. Navy Secretary.
  • Intrigued by the Spanish war he left the gov. And started a volunteer Calvary known as the rough riders.

PREsIDENCY AND AFTER

  • Presidency-September 14, 1901 to March 4, 1909
  • Took a African hunting trip after he was president
  • Didn't like how Taft was running things so he decided to run in the 1912 election
  • Doing so meant launching a third party initiative since Taft was running on the republican ticket
  • So Roosevelt formed the progressive party also known as the bull moose party

He lost to Woodrow Wilson in the 1912 election in a rather close popular vote. He considered running in 1916 getting the progressive party ticket but bowed down in favor of the Republican Party nominee Charles even Hughes

Roosevelt was the first president to successfully invoke the Sherman antitrust act against monopolies. He was very strict with business. His words greatly affected economic, environmental, and international affairs. He vowed to treat every group of America equal.

THE ROUGH RIDERS

Teddy was intrigued by the Spanish American war. He resigned from assistant secretary of navy to start the first voluntary Calvary unit called the rough riders. They participated in the capture of kettle hill. They also assisted in the seizure of San Juan ridge. At the time they were portrayed as old westerners who chased after bad guys on horses.

HUNTING

Roosevelt went a trip to Africa on a scientific expedition for the smithsonian institution. While he was there he trapped and shot over 11,000 animals. These collected specimens formed the basis of smithsonian's natural history museum collection. Several of these animals became widely known as pieces of taxidermy.

THEODORE THE AUTHOR??

Theodore published 35 books in total. He wrote about history, biology, geology and philosophy. When he was in college he wrote a book called "naval war of 1812". When published he became an official historian.
