April 1897

The Spanish American War

• After the sinking of the U.S.S Maine, T.R called for war 
• Resigns from Navy to command a volunteer cavalry 
• T.R's cavalry unit would famously become known as the Rough Riders

Heroism

• T.R would return to the U.S as a hero
• His exploits in the war had been well documented
• His popularity would pave the war for his political career

Governor Roosevelt

• Shortly after war, Roosevelt is elected governor of New York
• Won largely because of popularity he gained from war

Vice Presidency

• Because of popularity, T.R is nominated for vice presidency
• McKinley wins again, largely because of popularity of T.R

Presidency

• McKinley assassinated in 1901
• T.R becomes president at just 42 years of age

Trust Busting

• T.R vehemently opposed big business trusts 
• Sought to eliminate them 

Panama Canal

• Sought to connect Pacific and Atlantic 
• Waterway would serve to defend nation
• Also would assist commerce 

Latter end of Presidency

• Reelected in 1904
• Great White Fleet
• Nobel Peace Prize for ending Russo-Japanese War

After Presidency

• Would establish Bull Moose Party
• Support U.S involvement in WWI
• Would go on many exotic hunting and exploring trips
