WHAT IS TEEN PREGNANCY?

  • TEEN pregnancy is pregnancy in human females body under the age of 20
  • PREGNANCY can take place after the start of puberty before the first menstrual period

STATISTICS

  • In 2016 a total of about 270,000 babies were born by mothers ages 15-19
  • Teen with lovers who are much older are twice likely to have unprotected sexual inter-course
  • We have a birth rate 26.5 per 1,000 women in this age group (14-20)

FACTS

  • Around 85% of teen pregnancies are unplanned
  • 7.2% of teens get no medical care
  • Around 700,000 teens between 17 &19 become pregnant each year
  • 40% of females in the U.S. become pregnant before they reach the age 20; half of them get abortions

- PREGNANT TEENS ARE MORE LIKELY TO ABUSE DRUGS, ALCOHOL, OR TOBACCO
- ABOUT HALF OF ALL NEW CASES OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES OCCUR IN TEENS, AND THESE DISEASES ARE PAST DOWN TO THEIR BABIES

MEDICAL PROBLEMS

  • Toxemia (high blood pressure during pregnancy)
  • Hypertension (the force of blood against the artery walls is too high; affects about 6-8%)
  • Severe anemia (low iron or vitamin levels)
  • Premature delivery (baby born earlier)
  • Placenta prevails (on the side of uterus wall)

WHO FEELS SEXUAL PRESSURE ?

  • 24% - 17 year old teen girls
  • 21% - teen girls 13-17
  • 12% - teen boys 13-17

PREGNANCIES BY INTENTION STATUS

PREVENTION

  • ABSTINENCE from sexual inter-course is the most effective way to prevent unplanned pregnancies
  • Positive communication between parents and teen helps teen establish high morals and values
  • If already having sexual inter-course then, they need to be educated on the use of protections and birth control
  • Make it known to teens the risks that come with having sex (sexually transmitted illnesses)
