As a child with autism, Temple faced many challenges. When she was diagnosed, her parents were told she would have to be institutionalized.

In the book "Emergence, Labeled Autistic", Grandin tells her story of the challenges she had to overcome and also her triumphs.

Before Grandin's book, people diagnosed as having autism were not expected to achieve or have productive lives.

With early interventions from mentors and teachers who taught Temple how to make accommodations in academic areas, speech and language, and social skills, Temple was able to achieve along side her peers who did not have autism.

"The mountains are pretty", she said,"but they don't give me a special feeling you seem to enjoy...you look at a brook, the flowers, I see the pleasure you get out of it. I'm denied that." -Temple Grandin

The DSM-V recently changed how autism is diagnosed (2013).

  • Due to being hypersensitive, Grandin was able to empathize with cattle.
  • Grandin designed slaughterhouses with consideration toward sensory issues cattle experience.
  • Over half of the slaughter houses in the US were built using Grandin's design.
  • Cattle now are slaughtered with more dignity and humanity because of Grandin's design.
