TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY (TVA)

Date of Establishment

The Tennessee Valley Authority was established on May 18, 1933.

Purpose

The Tennessee Valley was extremely hit by the Great Depression. The Tennessee Valley Authority's purpose was to modernize the Tennessee Valley using electricity and federal experts.

Who Benefited from TVA

9 million people are supplied their electricity needs from TVA. TVA also provides for the nation by finding new ways to conserve electricity.

Success

The Tennessee Valley Authority was successful because it helped to ease economic issues by creating jobs.

TVA ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Modernized the US region around the Tennessee River
  • Developed modern farming and generated hydroelectric power from dams
  • Built 40 dams to control flooding
  • Produced cheap electricity for the predominantly rural areas
  • Planted forests, conserving soil by reducing erosion

TVA Responsibilities Today

The TVA is still around today. Its main duties are carefully runs the nation’s fifth-largest river system in order to control flooding, make rivers easier to travel, provide recreation, and protect water quality.
