The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean and boarders Haiti.

HISTORY

  • 1844 Santo Domingo wanted it’s independence and became the Dominican Republic.
  • Important Dates:
  • Jan 21- Our lady of Altagracia
  • Jan 29- Duarte’s Day
  • Feb 27- Independence Day

PEOPLE/LIFESTYLE

  • Population-10,734,247
  • The Dominicans play baseball, it’s a national sport. Leagues were formed in the 1920s for baseball.
  • The Dominicans currency is peso(RD$). They like to dance and listen to music. They eat at noon, shops close around 3p.m.
  • Sundays are for going to the beach and river and to visit family.
  • Dominican also have a tradition of living with relatives under the same roof.
  • You cannot drink or advised not to drink tap water. Fruit should be peeled before eating, and if your eating a salad it should be washed in drinking water. You have to also check if chicken and pork are cooked right, wash your hands regularly.
  • Shorts and flip-flops are only meant for the beach. It’s respectful to visit churches, hospitals. You are supposed to cover your shoulders and wear covered shoes.

CULTURE

  • People in the Dominican Republic are mostly Roman catholic
  • They speak Spanish but they drop there s very quickly
  • A holiday that comes before Easter is called Carnaval. Another is Restoration Day.

GOVERNMENT

  • There president is Danilo Medina
  • He was re-elected as president
  • The Dominican Republic has a government that is Republic, Democracy, Representative Democracy, Presidential system.
